![]() ![]() Perhaps my first example isn't a PITA to break and to be fair it's not really a workflow issue so much as a UI issue, but multiple windows within the DAW is tedious, unorganized, an an unnecessary resource hog. I know it's not one of the choices you put in your post but my advice is to go with Logic if you're dead set on the other two and you do more than just making beats but to explore Ableton if you're not married to the other two options. My advice though if you want to save the money you'd spend on the MacBook but get a better production workflow I would look into Ableton. My experience with Logic is limited but I know a lot of pros use it to great effect and I watch a production YouTube channel where the host uses it and the workflow looks great to me. Not that you can't do it, there are people who make great full productions in FL Studio but for me the workflow for anything besides beat making us cumbersome and it lacks some features I feel like I can't live without. It's got such a fun workflow for beat making, however I would never try to use it as my main DAW for making big productions and mixing vocals. I don't mean this to trash FL Studio because I actually love FL Studio, it's SO fun to make beats in FL Studio. ![]() Tl dr: You are paying far more money for a Studio One subscription than you are with one off Cubase purchases. So depending on your version of Cubase, you are paying an additional £75 - £135 a year for Studio One (not even including the Cubase sale prices), and even then Cubase doesn't always release a new version every year. Your Studio One subscription is £13.41 a month, which is £160.90 a year (give or take for currency conversion). ![]() (Cubase also has a sale every year which coincidentally is right now and knocks those prices down to £51, £41, and £15 respectively). ![]() If you have Cubase Pro it costs £85 to upgrade, Cubase Artist costs £68, and Elements £25. I just went from Cubase 9 to Cubase 12 and usually go at least 2 iterations before I upgrade.Īnd then paying more then a year worth of subscription every time a new version hits I’ve heard great things in terms of workflow, UI looks inspiring, and it is pretty cheap considering all that it comes with.Įh? First of all you don't have to upgrade every time a new version comes out. Maschine, though not a DAW-DAW, is incredibly fun and has a very limited learning curve in my opinion.Īlso, I’ve never fucked around in bigwig, but I wouldn’t not research it. The only reason I haven’t upgraded is because of the whole M1/M2 Rosetta thing, and have read some people have issues with their plugin libraries when some are native and some are in Rosetta.īut just to reiterate, I highly recommend going for a Maschine and DAW combo. So to answer your question, it sounds like to me that FL would better suit you if you just want to start pumping out beats, and since you don’t already have a MacBook, but once again, if you’ve got that kinda cash, making a new MacBook is an exciting feeling. With all this said, I use Maschine to make 90% of my loops, then drag and drop audio into arrangement view, and I’ve used session view like 4 times in my life… not my cup of tea. Also, I’ve been using ableton for 7 years and I still find neat tricks and techniques I didn’t know about, there are a shit ton of functions, especially when you get into envelope editing. Ableton might have a shit and uninspiring UI, but it gets hella inspiring when you know how to quickly achieve what you’re looking to do. I also really like abletons way of managing send/return tracks, busses, and groups. That alone was enough for me to switch to ableton where automating is much more intuitive, have one of my favorite delays, and hands down my favorite stock compressor options, especially for sidechaining. I used logic and maschine for years, but I didn’t like logics compressors, delays, automation function, and found their instruments lackluster. If you’ve got that kind of cash, getting a new laptop and getting logic is a solid investment. ![]()
